GOSHEN CONSERVATION COMMISSION

MINUTES - REGULAR MEETING

JANUARY 6, 2010

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:38 P.M. by John Ross, Chairman

ATTENDANCE: John Ross, Joan Lang, Anders Nygren, Chris Marino and Barry Donaldson.  Excused absence Barnett Laschever and Audra Allen.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A MOTION WAS MADE BY Barry Donaldson seconded by Anders Nygren to approve the minutes of the December 2, 2009 meeting.  There was no discussion on the minutes.  Said minutes were approved as presented.

OLD BUSINESS: Trail Maintenance – Looking ahead to spring, a brief discussion was held relative to the upper portion of the trail where the trail is eroded due to washouts caused by heavy rains. It was felt that with the use of shovels, etc. that manpower could do some work to repair some of the more eroded areas of the trail.

Goshen Scenic Areas Identification Brochure – Due to health reason Barnett Laschever was unable to attend the meeting. John Ross did show the Commission members the highlighted trail maps that would be used in the Brochure and that he would continue to find a date when he could work with Barnett Laschever to incorporate the marked scenic sights and trails with the descriptions of these areas which are being described by Barnett Laschever.

Open Space Identification of Continuous Corridors: Barry Donaldson shared with the commission members a spread sheet which he had prepared for the Goshen Land Trust which listed those lands surrounding or adjacent to preserved land parcels.  It was agreed that such a spread sheet would be helpful and could be used by the Conservation Commission in the identification of farm lands, forest, natural habitats and wetlands for future preservation.  Barry Donaldson stated that he would start to put together a spread sheet identifying the farmlands. It was believed that helpful information could be garnered from the Assessors Office in identifying these areas. Noted was the University of Connecticut website which provided insight on 169 Connecticut Towns.

John Ross reported that he had not had any further communication from Mark Cohen relative the holding of another meeting regarding Goshen Source Water Protection. The issue of traces of medicines being found in many public water sources is a major concern and the Commission agreed that concern should be brought to the attention of the public and as a start, an article would be written for the next Town Topics relative to the proper disposal of medicines and what should not be dumped into private or municipal septic systems. Audra Allen would be asked to see if she would be willing to write the article.

Barry Donaldson shared with the Board a newspaper article relative to the Town of Salisbury Resources Inventory of agricultural, open space, secure lands, water sources, etc. along with GIS maps. It was felt that it could be a useful reference tool and Barry Donaldson would try to procure a copy of the Salisbury Resources Inventory.

Discussed and reviewed briefly was the Revised 2001 Goshen Open Space Plan. It was noted that much of the information is outdated and under the ten year update revision schedule work could be done to start to update the plan.

There was no other business proper to come before said meeting.  MOTION TO ADJOURN WAS MADE BY Joan M. Lang, seconded by Anders Nygren.  The meeting adjourned at 8:35 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,

GOSHEN CONSERVATION COMMISSION

Joan M. Lang, Commission Clerk
