GOSJHEN CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES JUNE 2, 2010 MEETING
CALL TO ORDER: Chairman John Ross called the meeting to order at 7:32 P.M.
ATTENDANCE: John Ross, Joan Lang, Anders Nygren, Audra Allen and Chris Marino. Excused absence, Barnett Laschever. Absent, Barry Donaldson. Also present was Chris Allen.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES. A MOTION WAS MADE BY Anders Nygren seconded by Audra Allen to approve the minutes of the May 5, 2010 meeting. There was no discussion on the minutes. Said minutes were approved as presented.
OLD BUSINESS: Goshen Scenic Trail Brochure – John Ross reported that he had given the disc which included the scenic views and the trails to Rhonda, in the Fiscal Office, who was in the process of posting the material on the Town Web-site. It was noted that it is a large file which could result in not being able to post all of it on the web-site or require it to be put in a different format.
Town Topic Article: The Board reviewed the draft article written by Audra Allen which is to appear in the next publication of the Town Topics. The article is the first of several that the Conservation Commission Members will attempt to submit for future Town Topic publications relative to concerns for the quality of our water sources and what everybody can do to protect those sources. Audra Allen would make any suggested revisions to the article and e-mail it to the Commission Members for final review before submittal.
Perennial Bed Maintenance: It was noted that Christina Seidel is doing the weeding and any necessary trimming in the perennial beds. Anders Nygren and John Ross would check on the edging of the beds and if the edging work is not done by Christina Seidel, they would do the work.
Trail Maintenance: Discussed was the spring walking of the East Street South Trail. The date of Saturday June 19th was set. Commission members would meet at 9:30 A.M. at the trail head located near Reservoir Road. Also discussed was the walking of the recently Town acquired 45 acres North Goshen property. A request had been received from the Selectmen relative to the Commission walking the property to see if there was a potential for creating walking trails on the property. The Commission members were in agreement with the project but felt that due to heavy spring and summer growth that it would be best to wait until fall to walk the property lines and land to see what it has to offer and make recommendations to the Town for its potential use. The project would be flagged for a fall date. A
map of the property would be acquired from the Assessors Office for use in walking and marking the boundary lines if necessary.

Chris Marino informed the Board of the increase in the amount of conservation work that is going on in the area through the State Land Management Program. Connecticut’s share of $150,000.00 out of the $750,000 Grant dollars will be used to clear cut a 30 acre State owned
section of land on East St. North Abraham property for the purpose of providing early successional habitat for the New England Cotton Tail Rabbit as well as a heavy forest cut scheduled to be done along the Housatonic near the southern Kent border. Discussed was the potential for the Conservation Commission to become involved in the program. It was felt that habitat work being done in Goshen and in the Northwest corner of the state could be used as a future article for the Town Topics.
Chris Marino talked on the creating of a data base for identifying both State and private lands, the management of the lands and results of cuts and retreatment schedule.
It was noted that the Town is moving forward with the digitizing of the Town Maps. The major portion of the project is covered under a $10,000.00 Incentive Housing Grant.
There was no other business to come before the meeting. A MOTION TO ADJOURN WAS MADE BY Joan Lang seconded by Audra Allen. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 P.M.
Respectfully submitted
