Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting
January 20, 2009

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 2:30 P.M.

PRESENT: Barney Laschever, Jeff Johnson, Diana Bernard, Cathy Nygren Lynn Steinmayer, Bob Valentine  and  via conference call Henrietta Horvay.

SECRETARY’S MINUTES: Motion to accept minutes of December 16, 2008 and December 18, 2008 by Jeff Johnson and seconded by Cathy Nygren.  Motion passed by all present.

CORRESPONDENCE: Lynn Steinmayer read a letter on Humanities Grant that the Library received reference picture America Award, series and resource book.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Lynn Steinmayer reviewed per report (attached).
Lynn spoke about the ARTIST suggested for February, Pottery or Artwork from the Goshen Center School students, August photographs of Goshen landscape, programs on job search and writing resumes.
Lynn stated the paleontology classes are for grades 3-12 .  They have specific guidelines to follow.
Jeff spoke about more people using the library in hard times.
Discussion about Publicity. Barney asked about press releases, Diana will work on this, also Henrietta when she returns.  Barney asked about submitting releases to the Lakeville Journal.
Diana asked Lynn about having a concert in July and August like last year. Lynn will check into the event.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT. Barney asked about new member. Henrietta stated that a letter was sent to the board of selectman and is on the agenda for Tuesdays meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT:      Jeff Johnson submitted his report (attached).  Jeff spoke about the Harmon Fund and the roll-over as noted on report.  Jeff spoke that an account is needed for  the  check that comes from the State Fund for Library., Survey Grant)
Jeff asked Bob Valentine to speak about the budget.
 Bob Valentine stated the town at the present time is in a short fall of $140,000 in revenue.  Interest income down $86,000, Carlisle fund off 2/3 of income, building permits down 50% and not sure if the State Grant will be received.
Bob spoke that the town is looking at all budgets to find ways to save.  Not sure of tax payments dues in January payable on February 1st.  If taxes off 1% that equals $88,000 of revenue.
Jeff asked about the school budget.  Bob stated that the first selectmen have had discussions with the school board.
Bob stated that there is a spending freeze on all line items, other than salaries.  No more purchases.   All Grants are lagging.
Jeff spoke about using the Harmon Fund to purchase books.  The fund was setup for the focus of books for children.  Jeff stated the Friends of the Library are covering the program cost.  The summer reading program sponsors and donors need to be contacted to continue the program.
Bob spoke about the 2009-2010 Budget:
Budget should be -0- increase. There will be a staff meeting on Thursday where various ides and suggestion with be asked to cut cost.  The board of selectmen will go with no pay increase next budget year.  May have to cut staff/hours?

Jeff will draft a budget for 2009-2010 for the February Library meeting

Bob Valentine left meeting at 3:26 P.M.

Jeff spoke about the wine tasting.  Jeff spoke to Judy Motel at Sunset Vineyards. We can use the tasting room that holds 25 or the production room that holds 75.  Cost of ticket should be $25.00.  Need to discuss insurance. Possible date May 16th from 4-6 P.M.  Food need to be donated. chocolates and cheese.  Lynn will check with 3 Oaks. Cathy will check with Litchfield candy
and other vendor. Ann Kelly will be asked if she know many vendor in Goshen.

OLD BUSINESS:    Report on roadside sign.  Cathy spoke about sending a letter to the State .  Discussion that the old sign is rotten.  Need to explore other areas for funds for the sign.

ADJOURNMENT: Meeting adjourned at 3:50 P.M. Motion made by Barney Laschever and seconded by Jeff Johnson.  Motion passed by all present.
