November 18, 2008
GOSHEN PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF
November 18, 2008 MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 1:40PM.  Present were Barney Laschever, Cathy Nygren, Diana Bernard, Jeff Johnson and Director Lynn Steinmayer.  Henrietta Horvay was excused.  Jeff made a motion to approve the minutes of the Oct. 29th meeting. It was seconded by Diana.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  Barney brought up the need for students to know more about George Washington and the Revolution.  A discussion followed and the program committee will pursue the idea of having re-enactors perform.  Wamogo will not provide addresses of Goshen students for us to publicize events geared to their interests.  It was decided to postpone the essay contest until a better hook can be developed.
Barney showed an article about a “living library” at which patrons would be able, privately, to speak to, ask questions of and learn from people of interest.  We will consider that idea for a future event.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:  Attached.  The number of DVD’s being used was down considerably and Lynn will analyze the usage to determine if those monies should be spent elsewhere.  Barney suggested that new DVD’s should be described on the website. Jeff suggested the same for new books.  A discussion was held regarding Public Performance Site Licensing.  Lynn will ask them if the school cafeteria is acceptable.
TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jeff reported that the auditors said that the Expendable Trust did not meet requirements for municipal funds.  The town attorney said it should go into capital and non-recurring funds for general library purposes.  The board approved these recommendations.
COMMITTEES:  There were no committee reports.
OLD BUSINESS:  Regarding town policy of discarding town property, we are exempt as long as our culled materials are given to the Friends to use for  library fund-raising.
Lynn will review the 1/1/1992 policies regarding collection acquisition and retention and make her recommendations at our next meeting.
Cathy will check with Mrs. Turner, the GCS principal, about removing the old rotting library/school sign and replacing it with only a library sign since the school recently got a new sign.  She will then call the State garage and ask about obtaining a standard metal library logo sign.
In discussion the 2009 calendar, Lynn asked if the library could be closed on Dec. 26 since it is a Saturday while staying open on MLK Day. The board agreed with that as well as its being closed on July 3rd since the town offices are also closed.  Lynn will check with the staff and then speak to Bob Valentine.
At 3:08, Jeff made a motion to adjourn; it was seconded by Diana.

Respectfully submitted,

Catherine A. Nygren
Secretary
