July 31, 2008 Special Meeting
GOSHEN PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF
July 31, 2008 SPECIAL MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 1:34PM.  Present were Barney Laschever, Cathy Nygren, Henrietta Horvay, Diana Bernard, Jeff Johnson and Director Lynn Steinmayer.  Suzanne Mazzarelli was excused.
Henrietta made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 17 meeting.  It was seconded by Barney.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  Barney suggested that next year we have a board/staff picnic and then expand it to invite other librarians.  Lynn will check with Dale to see if we would have to pay a rental fee for Camp Coch.   He also suggested a 24 hour reading of Huck Finn as a fund raiser for the Mark Twain House.  Henrietta moved to approve this suggestion. Diana seconded it.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Attached.  Lynn has moved the periodical rack and replaced some unpopular magazines with others.  Henrietta suggested that a notice be placed in a conspicuous spot to advise patrons of the changes.
TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jeff advised us that the Endowment Fund was slightly increased as of 6/30/08.  Civic Family Services donated $500 for the summer reading program.
COMMITTEES:  The Long Range Planning Committee’s minutes of July 8 were presented.  A full report regarding the recent survey will be available at the August meeting.  Cathy suggested that a “New Resident” packet be left at the Post Office. Woodridge Lake and the school were also thought to be good pick-up points
A Program Committee discussion was held re movie night.  Lynn will check the rules for the need for permits if no fees are charged.   The July 25th Music Night was a success with about 80 attending.
OLD BUSINESS: The Writing Contest needs more publicity.  Lynn will contact the newspapers. Henrietta said the deadline has to be publicized.  Lynn suggested that, next year, the fliers be distributed in May/early June.  She will request a $100 gift from Torrington Savings Bank for the 2nd place winner.

Since this was a Special Meeting, no New Business was discussed.

Respectfully submitted,

Catherine A. Nygren
Secretary
