Goshen Garden Club Project- the Camp “Coch” administration building near the walking/running track recently received a new water fountain and a handsome garden with plants, shrubs and trees- a real facelift!. The Goshen Garden Club selected that site to beautify to commemorate their own 75th anniversary. The next time you are traveling on Beach Street be sure to check it out.

Town Wide Tag Sale-  30 families took part in our 3rd Annual Town Wide Tag Sale on Saturday, September 20th . This event has become a fun way in which to part company with accumulated “attic treasures” for only a $5 registration fee and some sweat equity organizing and preparing your items for sale.  

Halloween Party- October 24th was the 12th Annual Halloween Party at Camp Coch and the lodge was full to bursting with goblins and their parents! Thanks to all the businesses and the many individual volunteers who made the event a success!

Field Hockey Fun- 36 youngsters in grades 3-6 participated in this lively skill development program each Tuesday this fall after school. Teachers Cheryl Martinelli and Emily Cahill were the coaches. A lively post season game was held at the James Morris School in November against players from that feeder program.

Frankenstein Lantern Workshops-  in October potter Reggie Delarm worked with 42 youngsters in Goshen school creating spooky green clay lanterns. The projects were then placed in her kiln and returned in time for Halloween. Her classes are immensely popular and always fill quickly.

Soccer- this season the three towns in the regional school district formed the Wamogo Futbol Club (WFC) in order to develop a program similar to that of other larger towns or school districts. The hope was that the children would play on recreational teams more suited to their skill level, that the format would foster friendships with other kids in the school district and would make better use of the available volunteer base. The program served Pre-K through 8th grades.

Men’s Hoops- informal pick-up style basketball action started on the Goshen Center school court on October 3rd and continues into spring. Fellows can play on Sunday evenings from 6:30- 9:30 pm and/or Tuesdays from 6-9 pm. Cost for the whole season is only $35- pay to Goshen Rec.  Landon Gardella is the supervisor who can be reached at 860-485-5926.

Women’s Volleyball-   informal volleyball for gals started on Monday, November 3rd in the Goshen School gymnasium from 7:30-9 pm. The hour allows moms to get through the dinner hour and homework help before heading out to the gym for some exercise and lots of laughs. Lisa Tillmann is the supervisor and she welcomes new players. The fee is $35 per season payable to Goshen Rec.

Adult Yoga- Wendy Larsen teaches “a sane and practical brand of yoga” in the school cafeteria on Monday evenings from 7-8 pm. All levels are welcome to take part. Each class is $10. Wendy can be reached at 860-738-9293.

Anusara Yoga – instructor Jan Troy offers adult yoga classes at Camp Cochipianee lodge on the following schedule: Mondays from 6-7:30 pm a Level 2 and 1 class for moderate to strong on-going Anusara students, Wednesday mornings from 9:15- 10:45 for students of all levels and also on Wednesdays from 11- 12:15 a Gentle Yoga class. Gentle Yoga is a lighthearted class with gentle postures, breathing and meditation. Call Ms Troy at 491-4063 for more information.

Goshen Turkey Trot- the Goshen Running Club will hold their 31st Turkey Trot at 10 am on Thanksgiving morning with a start and finish at the Goshen Fair Grounds. There are classes for all ages and walkers are welcome to participate in the 6.2 mile event which has lots of hills and covers back roads. Turkeys and homemade pies are among the prizes. The race is run no matter the weather conditions. Race applications are available on line at www.goshenrunningclub.com . They are also at the Goshen Wine and Spirits and the Goshen Rec. Dept.

Senior Socialization time at Camp Coch- if you are dreading the coming winter months and the thought of being cooped up at home, plan to come to the fun gatherings at Camp Cochipianee every Tuesday from 1-3 pm. There will be time to play cards& board games, challenge our new Nintendo wii system interactive games and enjoy light refreshments. If there is enough interest, a second session will be offered on Thursdays from 1-3 pm. Need a ride? Call the Goshen Hospice and Community Care office at 491-4673.

Coming in the early spring- Goshen physical therapist Jill Maeder will be offering classes at Camp Coch for those who suffer from arthritis. Details were not in place at publication time.

AARP 55 Alive Classes-   the fall edition of this class in town was held on November 3rd and 5th at the town office. Drivers who are 62 and older who complete the 8-hour class receive a 5% reduction in auto insurance for two years while also gaining a ton of  valuable safe driving information. John Diorio is the instructor. Call the Rec. Office for the date of the spring classes.

VAST Snowmobile Safety Course-  once again volunteer instructors Barry Hall and John Miller will be teaching a free snowmobile safety class on Sunday, November 16th from 9-3pm at the Goshen Firehouse. Anyone turning 12 by April 15th of 2009 is eligible to receive a certificate. The class is required for those individuals who were born after July 1, 1983 and who plan to ride in Vermont but it provides valuable safety information for use in any state on any trails. Call John Miller at 491-0122 to register. Class size is limited to the first 40 participants who register. Bring your own lunch.


Hand Drummer’s Classes-  teacher George Werner is offering classes for beginners here in the Goshen school cafeteria. Students who are ages 10- adults are welcome to participate. The fundamentals of hand drumming plus African hand rhythms and improvisational rhythms will be covered. The first round of four classes will end on November 19th but if there is continuing interest, others will be run. Classes run for 1 ? hours for 4 weeks for $60. Karate for Kids- students in grades K- 6 may participate in karate classes with the instructors from Family Martial Arts right after school on Mondays in the school gym from 3:30-4:30 pm. Classes teach focus, self esteem, self control, goal setting, teamwork and patience. Cost is $54 for 4 weeks. Call Dean Franco at 860-480-2198 for more information.

Dog Workshop-  Gary Bernstein, a licensed dog therapist, has presented  two workshops entitled “Why Dogs Do What They Do/and How To Change Behavior” at Camp Coch lodge. They were designed to give the humans in the family construct an insight as to how a dog’s mind works as well as some of the dos and don’ts of pet ownership. Call him at 491-2024 to find out when the next pet workshop will be held.

Family Ice Fishing Workshop- trained DEP volunteers will teach a class at 1:00 on Saturday, January 10th in the school cafeteria. It will explore ice fishing tackle, legal methods, winter pond ecology and safety.  

Friday Ski at Mohawk- how lucky we are to have the supervision of this activity in the capable hands of veteran volunteer Lisa Tillmann. The program starts on January 9th and runs (weather permitting) for six consecutive weeks right after school on Fridays. There is an optional bus to the mountain. Kids may either ski or snowboard. The cost varies as to the options selected. Contact the Rec. Office for a flyer. Registration deadline is November 25th at noon.

Mid-Week Ski at Mohawk-  seasoned volunteer Nanci Howard will again run this Tuesday ski and snowboarding option starting January 6th. Participants need to provide their own transportation to and from the mountain. This day of the week is less busy and crowded at Mohawk. Costs will vary according to the selections made. Register by November 25th at noon.

2nd and 3rd Grade Girls Instructional B-Ball-  busy dad Dan Nemergut will be working with this age group on Sunday mornings in the school gym. It is the only time he has available because he is a varsity high school coach as well as the Route 44 7th and 8th grade boy’s coach. Call the Rec. Office for specific times and the starting date.

2nd and 3rd Grade Boy’s Skill Development- still needing a volunteer at printing time.

Wamogo Rec. In-House Basketball Skills Program- all boys and girls in grades 4,5,& 6 are invited to improve their b-ball  skills and have fun at Wamogo High School on Saturday mornings from 9-11 starting  December 6th. For more information contact Mary Stolle Wamogo Athletic Director at 567-6648.

5th and 6th Girl’s Basketball – this is a recreation level travel team that participates in the Northwest Basketball League. Barry Anstett and Lisa Tillmann will serve as the coaches for this activity which practices each Tuesday and Thursday from 4:45-5:45 pm at G.C.S. and plays home games mid-days on Saturdays. Cost is $45 per player which includes a reversible game shirt and money for the game officials.

5th and 6th Route 44 Travel Team- at printing time we were still searching for a coach for this squad comprised of select players from district #6. They practice in Goshen gym once a week and play one or two games each weekend.

7th & 8 th  Route 44 Travel Team- seasoned varsity high school coach Dan Nemergut has been pressed into service to guide this select team of boys and very skilled girls in the regional school district. They will practice Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 at G.S.C. and play home games here as well on Saturdays and Sundays.



DAY TRIPS:

Volunteer Day Trip Leader Angela Theriault works with the Recreation Department to organize and lead day trips to various destinations. Within the past year, we have combined forces with Mary Swienckowski, the senior group leader of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Torrington. The increased pool of potential day trippers has allowed us to go on more trips without worrying about cancellation due to low enrollment. We also offer two pick up points- Camp Cochipianee and the church on Charles Street in Torrington. It also means that Goshen folks need to jump onboard a bit more quickly so they don’t miss the boat! A Hartford Christmas- this December 9th adventure heads for the Wadsworth Atheneum for its 34th Annual Festival of Trees. 100 individually designed tees are displayed in various galleries. There will be live musical entertainment and time to visit the Museum Gift Shoppe. A special holiday luncheon will follow at Carbone’s in Hartford’s Little Italy. The menu: garden salad, choice of Veal Parmagiana, Chicken
Marsala or Broiled Salmon, vegetable, potato, beverages and Tiramisu for dessert. Next is a stop at Vinny’s Holiday Showplace before completing the special day with a drive through the Bright Nights display in Springfield’s Forest Park- 2.5 miles of over 600,000 holiday lights. Cost person is $76 and includes the driver’s gratuity.

St Patrick’s Celebration at Aqua Turf- bust out the green for March 12th when it is off to Southington to the wonderful Aqua Turf facility for a day to enjoy all that is Irish. Coffee and donuts will be there upon arrival. Luncheon includes; tossed salad, penne pasta, corned beef and cabbage, baked scrod, potato, buttered carrots, mint chocolate chip ice cream and a complimentary glass of wine or beer. There will be Irish Step Dancers and an Irish band to provide plenty of entertainment. Cost is$67 per person.

Center Stage at Chez Joseph – entertainer Altoa Ripley has performed all across the Northeast and in Hawaii and on May 12th he will be in Agawam, Massachusetts at Chez Joseph. His rich resonating baritone voice allows him to recreate the tunes of Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, Barry White and Ray Charles and many more. Reviewers describe his shows as entertaining and spunky. Food offerings include: sweet confections and coffee, fresh fruit cup, chicken Francaise, veggie, potato and mud pie for dessert. Cost is $71 per person.

Lobsterfest-  on the 20th of August its off to the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA for wonderful food and lots of musical entertainment from the River Ramblers who can play everything from old tunes to traditional and from contemporary to jumpin’ jazz. Luncheon includes: hors d’oeurve tray, clam chowder, boiled lobster, barbecued ribs and chicken, corn, baked potato and strawberry ice cream sundae. Each guest also receives a petit souvenir bottle of wine. Cost is $73 per person and includes the bus driver’s gratuity.

EXTENDED STAY TRIPS: Our longer trips are either with Collette Vacations(C) or Premier World Discovery (P) Please be aware that with today’s rising costs, the air taxes and fees/surcharges are often subject to increase until the trip is paid in full.

California Rail Discovery- (P)  this 7-day trip departs from Bradley International on March 25th, 2008 and features San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and the Napa Valley Wine Train. The $1,899 price per person double occupancy includes roundtrip air, a tour director, 10 meals, 6 nights in first class hotels, motorcoach, train ride, sightseeing and baggage handling. A $330 per person fee secures reservations. Optional Cancellation Waiver and Post Departure fee is $140.

South Dakota (C)- August 21st, 2009 this excursion departs from Bradley International Airport for a 7-day trip whose highlights include: the Black Hills, an 1880 Steam Train, Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Wall Drug Store, and Badlands National Park. The double occupancy rate of $1,879 includes 10 meals. A $250 deposit is required at registration. Optional Cancellation Waiver and Insurance is $225 per person. There will be a slide showing on March 12 at the Rec. Office on this trip at 6:30 pm. Spectacular South Africa- (C)  start planning and saving for this 13-day trip of a lifetime which departs from New York on the 17th of September.
