ADULT PROGRAMS:

Something New for Seniors!- come join a busy bunch of seniors who are enjoying their time together every Tuesday afternoon from 1-3pm at Camp Cochipianee. They play cards and games, socialize and enjoy light refreshments. In the future, we are hoping to purchase a wi Nintendo unit with interactive games such as bowling, tennis, baseball etc for this group. Folks who need a ride should call Susan Leigh of Goshen Hospice and Community Care at 491-4673.

Goshen Quilter’s Guild- a group of quilters gathers in the west wing of Camp Coch each Thursday morning from 10- 12:30 to create articles for personal use as well as for charitable organizations. Sally Smith is their leader; call her at 491-3784 if you are interested in joining this congenial group.

Golf Lessons-  Fairview Farms golf PGA professional Bob Sparks is offering Golf 101- four sessions to introduce the game focusing on putting, chipping, iron and wood play as well as etiquette and basic rules of the game. Classes will be either 10-11 am or 5:00-6:00 pm on May 13,15, 20 and 22. The cost is $ 80. The course is in Harwinton. Call the golf shop at 689-1000 to register.

Golf Level 1- this is four session course for those who have completed Golf 101. Classes will focus on improving your game through the mental approach, drills and proper practice. On course time will be included. Fee is $80- make checks to Fairview Farms and call r 689-1000 to register at Goshen Rec. Office. Classes will be April 29, May 1,6 and 8 either from 10-11am or 5-6pm.

Parent Child Golf Classes-  this one hour class is designed to help the parent/child relationship in learning the game of golf. Focus is on the basic fundamentals and how to recognize faults and prescribe the fix. Hint: Keep your head down and your left arm straight are the WORST tips!! Cost is $40 per session on the following dates; May 25,June 29, July 20 and August 17 from 1-2pm. Call 689-1000 to regsiter.

Adult Yoga- Goshen residents are fortunate to have two yoga programs right in town. On Monday evenings in either the school cafeteria or gym Wendy Larsen teaches what she describes as a “sane and practical” brand of yoga from 7-8 pm. Her phone is 738-9293. Also on Monday evening at Camp Coch, Anusara Yoga is taught by veteran instructor Jan Troy from 6-7pm as well as on Tuesday 9-10:30 am Level 1&2 and Thursday evenings Beginners from 6-7:30pm. Jan’s number is 491-4063.  

Free Skin Cancer Screening- Dr. Albert Babcock, a plastic surgeon, will be at Camp Coch on May 15th from 1-3 pm providing a no cost evaluation for possible skin tumors. This is not a full body scan but simply an opportunity to have a questionable spot or two seen by a medical professional. Call the Rec. Office at 491-2249 to schedule an appointment.

17th Annual Poppy’s Fishing Derby- details concerning this free fun family event have not been finalized. Event is generally the first Saturday in May and features a free hot breakfast and trophies and prizes for the successful “fisherkids.”  
 
AARP 55Alive Class-  we generally offer this 8 hour class twice each year –once in the fall and again in the spring. Call the Rec. Office at 491-2249 to learn the details about the spring class. Participants who are 62 and older who complete this classroom course
(no tests) receive at least a 5% reduction in auto insurance for two years.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES:

T-Ball- Goshen’s T-Ball program will begin on April 8th (if field conditions permit) and run on Tuesdays on the school field. 4yr olds and Kindergarten players will report at 5:30 pm while first and second graders will play from 6:30-7:30. Mary and Steven Romano will be assisted by Robert Albini. This year’s team sponsor is Progressive Paving which will provide each brand new player with a cap and a T-shirt. New players must register at the Rec. Office by March 31st . Fee is $5.

Camp Cochipianee Day Camp- forms are available for the town’s day camp that will run for six weeks from June 30-August 8. We serve kids ages 3 -11.Registration takes place on May 1st at the camp lodge. No forms can be received before that date.

CIT and Junior Counselor in Training Applications- students seeking to work or volunteer at Camp Coch will need to submit applications by May 9th.

Tiny  Tot’s Playgroup- volunteer mom Kara Harlow has taken over for Sarah St. John. They have lots of toddlers and their caregivers who look forward to Monday mornings from 9:30-11 when they gather at Camp Coch lodge for playtime. This program has served a very real need for socialization for both the kiddies and their parents. Need more information? Call Kara at 491-9003.

Karate for Kids- instructors from Family Martial Arts offer classes on Monday afternoons at Goshen Center School gymnasium from 3:10-4:15 pm and Wednesdays at Camp Coch from 6-7 pm. For more information, call Dean Franco at 480-2198 or instructor Dolly Joray in Goshen at 491-9666.

1st  Fun- this FREE ongoing activity is supervised by mom Traci Narkewicz and is for first grade students only. It is aimed at providing weekly physical activity and fun in the school gym on Tuesdays right after school until 4:30 pm.

Multi –Sport Camp-  US Sports Institute counselors will be in Goshen June 23-27th at the Goshen Center School Field running either a half, full day or shortened Squirt’s camp. Campers will be exposed to about 15 different sports in one week. Go online www.USSportsInstitute.com to learn more or to register.

Field Hockey Clinic- US Sports Institute staffer will run a field hockey clinic at Goshen Center School field July 7-11 5pm-7pm for players ages 7-14. Cost is $95.

Tennis Clinic- suited to players beginner to intermediate level, this USSI camp for ages 7-14 will teach the fundamentals in stroke production, court movement and footwork. Camp will be July 14-18 from 9-10:30 am for ages 7-10 and 10:30- noon for ages 11-14.Cost is $85.

Beginner’s Golf Clinic- this USSI camp was very well-received last summer. Camp will be August 4-8 from 4:30-6 for ages 5-7 and 6-7: 30 pm for ages 8-11. Cost is $85.                                                                                                   .
British Soccer Camp- the British are coming again! Last summer this camp was very popular with both kids and their parents. Camp will run at Camp Coch field on August 11-15 in three different time schedules for players of different ages. Parents are encouraged to register online at www.challengersports.com 45 days prior to camp so that they receive a $30 value handsome British Soocer jersey FREE!

One Day Golf Clinics-  PGA professional Bob Sparks at Fairview Farms in Harwinton is offering children’s clinics every Tuesday and Thursday from May 20-August 21 from 6-7 pm. Groups will be divided by age/ability providing an opportunity to advance by skill level. Cost is $15 per child or $25 per family. Call 689-1000 to register.

Golf Summer Camp-Fairview Farms in Harwinton will run two sessions of children’s camps from 10am-12 noon  Monday through Thursday July 14-17 and Monday –Thursday August 18-21 . The camps will serve kids ages 6-12. Cost is $150 per session. Register by calling the golf shop at 689-1000.

Northwest Dance and Theater- director Kip Dipaolo offers dance and acting classes at Camp Coch lodge throughout the academic year. There will be a June dance recital and children’s play  at the Forman school to culminate the year’s studies.

NEW Middle School Basketball for Boys- parents Lonnie and Chris Albano and John Davis are the volunteers in charge of this on-going  activity held in the Goshen Center School gym on Fridays from 6-8 pm. Boys in the district are welcome . Questions? Call Albanos at 491-4677.

TRIP INFORMATION:

Day Trips- hard working volunteer Angela Theriault is working in coordination with Dale Ives in the Rec. Office to put together a variety of day trip offerings. This year we have teamed up with St. Paul Lutheran Church’s Senior Fellowship in Torrington so our numbers should prevent cancellation of trips due to low enrollment. We will offer two pick up sites- one at Camp Cochipianee and also at the church in Torrington. Angela’s phone number is 491-4384 and she is always open to trip suggestions. The following day trips are to be carried out with Friendship Tours. When registering, kindly make checks to: Goshen Recreation Department.

Dutch Apple Cruise- Tuesday, June 24th has day trippers headed to Albany, New York for lunch at famous Carmine’s restaurant, owned by TV personality Chef Carmine Sprio, where you will enjoy cuisine prepared at “Carmine’s Table” show. You’ll have the choice of three entrees: Pasta Primavera, Tilapia Florentine or Chicken Sorrentino plus dessert and beverage. Also included in this adventure is a 2- hour narrated cruise down the Hudson River aboard the Dutch Apple. Cost is $70 and includes the driver’s gratuity.   

Thimble Islands Cruise and Chowder Pot III-  this trip was a sellout the last time we offered it- so don’t delay in signing up!  Departure is at 9 am on Monday, August 11th for the Rocky Isles off Stony Creek Coast in Branford, CT where you’ll board the Sea Mist for a cruise along the Thimble Islands. Lunch will follow at the Chowder Pot III where they are known for their generous portions of fresh seafood. Choice of; Baked Stuffed Sole with Seafood Stuffing, Walnut Encrusted Salmon or Chicken Marsala with Strawberry Ice Cream Cheesecake for dessert. Also included is a stop at the Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT. Cost is $69.

Oktoberfest at the Platzl Brauhaus October 7th is the date for this full day of entertainment, food, fun, music and dancing at the Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, N.Y. Upon arrival there will be a welcome reception with homemade donuts and Danish pastry along with coffee and tea. Lunch includes; Hearty Barley Soup, choice of Roast Pork Platter or Roasted Half Chicken along with potato, vegetable, family style bratwurst, spare ribs, red cabbage, sauerkraut, applesauce and dessert. Beer and soda will be swerved from noon to 5 pm. Cost is $77.

December Day Trip-plans are in the works for a December trip to the Festival of Trees at the Wadsworth in Hartford with lunch at a nice restaurant and a tour of Bright Nights. Call Angela for more details at 491-3484.

EXTENDED STAY TRIPS:

The Goshen Recreation Department cordially invites the public to take part in our array of extended stay trips for 2008. The notation “C” will follow those traveling with Collette Vacations while those with a “P” indicate a Premier World Discovery trip. Both companies recommend that travelers take out optional cancellation waiver and insurance policies. Trip brochures may be requested by calling Goshen Recreation Department at 491-2249 and leaving your name and mailing address.

Resorts of the Rockies- this dandy destination begins with a May 29th departure from Bradley International for 11 days spent in some of the finest resorts in the Canadian Rockies- including Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs. 15 meals are included in this trip, which highlights: Calgary, Banff, Columbia Icefields, Lake Louise, Jasper, Sun Peaks, Victoria, Butchart Gardens, Vancouver and Whistler. Alaska Inside Passage Cruise This 8-day sightseeing excursion departs on June 14th from Bradley. The cruise begins in Seattle, Washington aboard the NCL Star.
